The Hospital General de Castellón has launched a new 150 m² multidisciplinary unit for the comprehensive care of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and rare diseases, involving an investment of 250,000 euros.

This new area, which took five months to complete, will centralize all necessary specialties for these patients, providing coverage to the entire province of Castellón. The unit will become a provincial healthcare benchmark for the treatment of these conditions.

"Everything the patient needs will be addressed on the same day."

Marciano Gómez · Minister of Health
The Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, inaugurated the unit on Wednesday, highlighting the care model based on integrated attention in a single visit. This approach will include the participation of various specialties such as neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, clinical psychology, and social work.
Additionally, the unit will feature a case manager, responsible for continuous patient follow-up both at the hospital and at home, with the aim of early detection of potential complications. Gómez emphasized that this infrastructure is part of the network of reference units in the Valencian Community, with one in each province. Currently, in Castellón, there are approximately 36 people diagnosed with ALS.
Regarding human resources, the minister announced the creation of specific positions linked to these units, especially in neurology and internal medicine. During his visit, Gómez also reviewed phase 5 of the hospital's emergency department expansion, which includes an additional 400 m² and the incorporation of 24 observation spaces, along with staff rest areas. Phase 6 will complete the total renovation, with completion expected by July this year.
Furthermore, the staff will be reinforced with the planned addition of 6 doctors, 16 nurses, 10 orderlies, and 23 technicians, with an approximate investment of 2.15 million euros. Regarding the new Hospital General project, Gómez reported that the land expropriation process is ongoing, with one plot remaining. The Generalitat is working on the project's drafting, which has already been awarded, with the intention of applying for the building permit soon and starting work by the end of the year or early next year, once administrative procedures are resolved.
