The Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, was present at the opening of this unit, which represents a significant step forward in specialized care for these patients in the province of Castellón. He also took the opportunity to supervise the status of the Emergency Department expansion works.
The new unit, spanning 150 square meters, involved an investment of 250,000 euros and was completed in five months. It is designed to offer comprehensive and coordinated care to patients with ALS and rare diseases from across the province.
“"Everything the patient requires will be seen on the same day."
This care model is based on concentrating various specialties into a single visit, including neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, clinical psychology, and social work. The unit will also feature a case manager for continuous patient follow-up, both in the hospital and at home, aiming for early detection of potential complications.
Gómez highlighted that this unit integrates into the reference network of the Comunitat Valenciana, with one per province, and reiterated the Generalitat's commitment to these patients. Currently, there are 36 people diagnosed with ALS in Castellón. To strengthen the team, specific positions will be created, especially in neurology and internal medicine, prioritizing staff talent and commitment.
Regarding the Emergency Department works, the minister reviewed phase 5, which includes the expansion of 400 square meters, the incorporation of 24 observation spaces, and rest areas for staff. Phase 6, which will complete the total remodeling of the service, is scheduled for July of this year and will include reinforcing the staff with 6 doctors, 16 nurses, 10 orderlies, and 23 technicians, with an approximate investment of 2.15 million euros.
Finally, concerning the new Hospital General, Gómez reported that the land expropriation process continues, with one plot remaining to be finalized. The Generalitat is simultaneously working on drafting the project, which has already been awarded, and expects to apply for the building permit by the end of the year or early next year, once pending administrative procedures are resolved.
