The Institute for Women has sent a letter to the Torrent City Council demanding the withdrawal of an advertising campaign on bus shelters that it considers stigmatizes the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy.

The autonomous body, which depends on the Ministry of Equality, acted after receiving several complaints about the campaign, promoted by the Department of Childhood and Family. This campaign displays the belly of a pregnant woman with a drawing of a fetus and the slogans “Say yes to life” and “Torrent, yes to life”.
The Observatory of the Image of Women (OIM), responsible for ensuring adequate representation of women in advertising, analyzed the campaign. The letter reminds that access to voluntary termination of pregnancy is a right recognized by Organic Law 2/2010, of March 3, on sexual and reproductive health.

"I want to remind you that access to voluntary termination of pregnancy is a right recognized in our legal system."

Furthermore, the document refers to recommendations from international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Parliament, which urge to guarantee safe access to abortion. It warns that an institutional campaign that indirectly stigmatizes this right contravenes international consensus.
The director of the Institute for Women also points out that the dissemination of messages that exert moral or social pressure on free reproductive decision-making undermines women's health and well-being, and that the campaign contradicts the II Municipal Plan for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men of Torrent 2023-2027.

"The dissemination of messages that exert moral or social pressure on free reproductive decision-making undermines women's health and well-being."

Finally, it is recalled that Law 34/1988, of November 11, General Advertising Law, considers illicit all advertising that violates the dignity of the person or infringes the values and rights recognized in the Spanish Constitution. Therefore, the city council is requested to withdraw the messages and prevent their repetition in future actions.
