The mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, has presented a motion of confidence tied to the municipal budget after its rejection by the plenary, seeking to unblock management and force its approval next Tuesday, April 14.

The political situation in Alcoy has reached a point of maximum tension after the municipal plenary rejected the budget proposal presented by the coalition government of PSPV and Compromís. Faced with this deadlock, the city's mayor, the socialist Toni Francés, has announced an extraordinary plenary session for next Tuesday, April 14.
In this session, the budget will be subject to a motion of confidence, a tool regulated by the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime (LOREG) that links the continuity of the mayoralty to the approval of the economic document. This decision aims to unblock municipal management and compel opposition groups to take a clear stance.
The debate preceding this decision was marked by confrontation over the Alcoy Sur industrial project. While the municipal executive, in a minority, believes this plan should not interfere with the validation of the accounts, the opposition bloc —formed by PP, Vox, and Guanyar, in a majority— has used this point as a central argument for their negative vote.

The Popular Party has criticized the Government's “ambiguity” on industrial matters, Vox has denounced a lack of real investments, and Guanyar has demanded an explicit renunciation of the La Canal project to protect the Molinar aquifer, calling the executive's inconsistent stance “irresponsible.

This move by the mayor places the opposition in a dilemma with strict deadlines. If the motion of confidence does not receive majority support next Tuesday, a one-month period will be activated during which PP, Vox, and Guanyar can attempt to present a motion of no confidence with an alternative mayoral candidate. This is a complex scenario, given the ideological disparity of the groups that currently form the majority minority in the Alcoy council.
Should the opposition fail to articulate an alternative majority or if the motion of no confidence does not succeed, the 2026 budget will be automatically and definitively approved by legal imperative. With this ultimatum, the mayor seeks to force the approval of the accounts designed by PSPV and Compromís or for the opposition to assume the responsibility of forming a new government for the city.
