The decision was made in an extraordinary plenary session held this Thursday, where opposition groups —PP, Vox, and Guanyar Alcoi— voted against the economic proposals presented by the governing team, formed by the PSPV-PSOE and Compromís. This situation reflects the difficulty of governing in a minority and the lack of consensus on the city's financial future.
The main point of contention has been the Alcoi Sud industrial project, a key initiative for local economic development, promoted jointly with the Generalitat and the Chamber of Commerce. This project is still in the administrative and environmental processing phase, generating tensions among political forces.
“"The spokesperson for the Partido Popular, Carlos Pastor, has accused the mayor of “paralyzing the city” for not clearly positioning himself in favor of the development of this industrial land."
In the same vein, Guanyar Alcoi has stated that it will not support the accounts until the Alcoi Sud project is discarded or revised. For his part, Mayor Toni Francés has defended that the situation is the result of a blocking strategy by the opposition, whom he accuses of not wanting to negotiate.
“"The vote of confidence will allow “to unblock a situation caused by the lack of dialogue”."
Current legislation allows the mayor to link budget approval to a vote of confidence to ensure governability. If the plenary does not support him, a one-month period will open for the opposition to present a motion of no confidence with an alternative candidate. If this motion is not presented or does not prosper, the budgets would be automatically approved after the public exposure period. This week will be crucial for the stability of the municipal government in Alcoy.
