The Third Vice-Presidency and Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure, Territory and Recovery of the Generalitat Valenciana has launched a forest fire prevention plan for Penyagolosa Natural Park, with a ten-year validity.

This project, published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV) on April 24, seeks to protect Mediterranean ecosystems, which are severely threatened by fires. Interested parties have a period of 45 working days to consult it and submit allegations.
The main objective of the plan is to prevent the start of fires and detect them quickly, as well as to provide the environment with the necessary infrastructure to avoid or minimize their spread. To achieve this, various causes of fires will be addressed with specific actions.
Among the measures, recreational use will be regulated in recreation and camping areas, high visitor traffic zones, routes, and trails. It also proposes adapting and creating infrastructure, disseminating usage rules, and preparing fire points, containers, and parking areas. Regarding communication routes, the Ministry will inform about motor vehicle circulation regulations and restrictions in risk situations, limiting access to certain places at pre-emergency level 3 and clearing ditches on main roads.
The project also plans to regulate livestock and agricultural activity to reduce their danger as a source of fires, raise awareness about the risks associated with machinery use and the accumulation of plant debris, eliminate uncontrolled landfills, and establish safety distances between electrical conductors and vegetation.
This plan will cover 13,575 hectares and will affect the municipalities where the Natural Park is located (Vistabella del Maestrat, Villahermosa del Río, and Xodos), as well as Castillo de Villamalefa and Llucena del Cid, due to their forest continuity with the park. Between 2000 and 2024, 64 fires were recorded in the area, most of them small (0.59 hectares on average) and mainly caused by lightning (51). 70.5% occurred between June and September, with the highest incidence in the afternoon (13:00-18:00).
