These elements, whose exact age is unknown, correspond to an enclosed space of which there was no prior record. The current works involve partial demolition to preserve the heritage elements of two municipal buildings located at Arzobispo Segrià street, number 10, and in the Escurà square, number 5.
“"This is a significant find that has emerged during a municipal heritage maintenance action, offering us a new opportunity to deepen our knowledge of our built heritage."
Following the discovery of the arches, municipal technical services have requested the pertinent permission from the Directorate of Heritage of the Generalitat Valenciana to determine the dating and constructive characteristics of these elements. These studies will provide data to verify whether it is an element of historical interest or a more recent construction, which will allow deciding the possible future uses of the space and its integration into subsequent actions. This intervention is part of the municipal work for the urban regeneration of the Poble Nou neighborhood and the enhancement of its heritage.
One of the properties, located in the Escurà square, holds special interest within the urban complex, as it preserves part of the facade of an old building reconstructed in the 19th century, popularly known as l’Hostal del Racó or Hostal de Grau. Over time, this building has had various uses, such as an inn in the 18th century, a hostel in the second half of the 19th century, and subsequently, a drugstore during part of the 20th century.
The councillor highlights the significant commitment to heritage being carried out by the City Council with the works it executes in the historic center. In this regard, he refers to the 2.5 million euros already invested in the restoration and enhancement of the North Wall; the consolidation of buildings and landscape integration of the area of the future medieval “guard passage” also created in the surroundings of the North Wall; or the demolitions of several properties in Roses and Callaris streets, in the public land space where 12 new homes will subsequently be built with funds from the Generalitat Valenciana, and where a space integrated in this case into the surroundings of the South Wall will remain. In 2025, another construction project, specifically that of the South Wall, had to be modified after another archaeological find, in this case, a vaulted room dated to the beginning of the Modern Age that was consolidated to preserve it.
