“"Students have told me that they do not have a fundamental cafeteria space for social relations. They also need more time for the library and need better parking, because they have nowhere to park or park with great difficulty."

The new rector of the University of Valencia (UV), José Luis Gandia from Ontinyent, has proposed creating a bus line to connect the Ontinyent campus with various municipalities, aiming to ease parking problems and improve the campus's overall integration.
Gandia, who took office this Wednesday, expressed this initiative in an interview on the «Vosté dirà» program of Televisió Comarcal. According to the rector, the proposal seeks to serve students coming from outside Ontinyent who face difficulties in parking their vehicles. The idea is to explore, in collaboration with the Diputación de Valencia and other administrations, a route that allows students to be picked up and returned to their homes, thereby reducing traffic «collapse».
The rector emphasized the importance of listening to the needs of the university community, gathered during his electoral campaign. Among the demands, students expressed the lack of a cafeteria space for social interaction, the need for more library hours, and, especially, the parking problem. Gandia, who taught at the Ontinyent campus between 2000 and 2010, has been a «first-hand witness» to its growth and values its expansion, but acknowledges that «many issues still remain» to be addressed.
Regarding the new Veterinary degree, Gandia considers it a «strategic future project» for both the university and the entire Vall d'Albaida, which can help integrate the campus. However, he warns that its implementation must be «appropriately managed», ensuring its long-term sustainability. He recalled that Veterinary studies are the most expensive to maintain in the Spanish university system, even more so than medicine, making collaboration between administrations crucial to ensure their long-term viability.
The rector highlighted the «fundamental role» of the Generalitat in the structural funding of universities. Furthermore, he defended the need to support public Veterinary education, emphasizing the importance of veterinarians not only in animal welfare but also in the food safety chain and in the prevention of diseases transmitted from animals to humans.
