Since its opening in 2012, the CAI in Gandia has assisted nearly 400 people, establishing itself as the only center of its kind in the province of Valencia outside the capital. This resource, whose construction began in 2010, provides fourteen places (ten for men and two for women) and allows users to stay for up to a year, with an initial six-month period that can be extended.
The center not only offers accommodation and food but also includes pre-employment workshops and a family-like atmosphere. One of its unique features is that it accepts pets, boasting a garden with an organic orchard and a barbecue. Furthermore, users actively participate in the center's daily tasks, such as cleaning and meal preparation.
“"People come to us in pieces, and we have to put them back together. We not only try to solve their problems but also re-educate them and keep their minds occupied."
Chema Puente, coordinator of the Homeless Inclusion Area, emphasizes the importance of the CAI's work in the recovery of users, many of whom arrive with health issues and addictions. The center also places special emphasis on caring for women, who are often more vulnerable and invisible on the streets, avoiding showing their situation for fear of aggression.
The CAI's multidisciplinary team, supported by volunteers, helps residents manage basic aspects such as obtaining their SIP card, accessing medication, and handling banking procedures. Additionally, crucial psychological support is provided to boost their self-esteem and sense of belonging, as many believe they have lost their rights and become invisible.
