The Municipal Group of the Popular Party in the Gandia City Council has requested that a municipal plot, reclassified by the local government from free-rent development to protected housing, be used for the construction of public social housing. According to the Popular Party, this plot spans 1,347 square meters and is located on Sant Enric street, opposite the warehouse of a well-known construction material sales company.
The Popular Party has labeled the municipal government as "speculator" and "cynic," arguing that the parties forming it, the PSOE and especially Compromís, advocate for helping the most vulnerable through affordable housing but then approve selling the plot to "some friends," benefiting "only a few." This was stated by opposition party representatives Víctor Soler and Guillermo Barber at a press conference.
Soler and Barber state they are not against allocating municipal land for housing but criticize it being only one plot in an "incoherent" action by the government partners. "At first, when they presented it to us, it seemed like a good move, but then, when you dig deeper, we realize it's not so much. What we want is to protect the interests of those who have the least," commented Barber. The opposition leader proposed that "this matter be put on hold or its use changed, meaning the plot should be limited to public housing."
Guillermo Barber provided figures on housing precarity in Gandia and the high purchase and rental prices, stating that "our city is becoming more expensive at a rate higher than the rest of the province of Valencia."
For his part, Víctor Soler highlighted the actions in protected housing developed by the Generalitat Valenciana in Gandia, noting that "the regional government of the PP will build 226 public housing units this term, while the government of Gandia is at zero. In eight years, they have done nothing at all. We want management and facts, not so much propaganda."
In response, the councilor delegate for Housing, Salvador Gregori, lamented what he considers "a new demonstration that the PP of Gandia has entrenched itself in criticism and catastrophism," showing a "worrying lack of knowledge of the administration."
Gregori explained that the request to change the plot's use was made by a company to expand its facilities, denying any request for housing construction. "Soler and Barber have made a tremendous mistake," he stated, emphasizing that if housing were to be built, "only VPO could be built on that plot, so the PP's proposal is worthless."
The councilor added that Gandia has joined the Plan VIVE, showing "responsibility and institutional loyalty," and criticized the PP's response as "putting obstacles in the way and trying to confuse citizens with hoaxes." He asked the Popular Party to "get to work and help so that the works at Santa Anna stop progressing at a snail's pace."
