The Socialist Municipal Group of Castelló has accused the local government, led by Begoña Carrasco, of intending to privatize the management of the Castelló City Museum (MUCC). This move, according to the PSPV, would turn culture into a business and endanger a consolidated public project.
The Culture Councilor, Vicent Sales, explained that the conflict stems from the expiration of contracts for cultural informants, whose roles were tied to specific programs. The municipal government states it is exploring ways to create permanent positions for these informants, as their contracts cannot exceed eight years to avoid 'fraud of law'.
The deputy socialist spokesperson, José Luis López, raised this concern in a municipal information commission, inquiring about the museum's future plans after learning of its potential privatization. According to his account, the government team's response confirmed this intention. López criticized the decision, asserting that the municipal government aims to “commercialize” a public cultural space and warned that culture should not be dictated by economic profitability criteria or private interests.
The MUCC was established in 2018 by the government formed from the Pacte del Grau (comprising PSPV, Compromís, and Castelló en Moviment) to protect and disseminate local heritage from a public perspective. In 2019, the museum was integrated into the network of museums of the Generalitat Valenciana, strengthening its institutional recognition.
The museum operates as a decentralized model integrating various heritage sites within the municipality, such as Castell Vell, the Ermita de la Magdalena, El Fadrí, the Refugi Antiaeri, and the Roman villa of Vinamargo. Socialists warn that potential privatization could affect this model, leading to a loss of public control or changes in the management of cultural resources. Therefore, they have urged the local government to rectify its stance and guarantee the museum's public ownership and management.
“
"We cannot privatize cultural informant positions when those civil servant positions have not been created."
“
"The MUCC has been operating until now through program contracts that are coming to an end. What the PSOE and Compromís government should have done was create structural positions, create civil servant positions for cultural informants, and not rely on program contracts that expire."
The government team assures that they are working to ensure the continuity of services at the MUCC and are seeking solutions to guarantee its ongoing operation.
