Villarreal CF saw one million euros vanish from its coffers after Atlético de Madrid was defeated in a penalty shootout in the Copa del Rey against Real Sociedad. This amount was stipulated in the transfer agreements for footballers Alexander Sorloth and Álex Baena, which included variables for the yellow team based on the Madrid club's successes.
Despite this setback, the club had already secured over five million euros for reaching the Copa final and the Champions League semifinals. The sales of Sorloth and Baena were significant for Villarreal, with 32 million euros fixed for Sorloth and 42 million for Baena, plus additional bonuses.
“"Villarreal not only sold two key players well for their project, but also left doors open to continue collecting based on their subsequent performance at Atlético, a policy usually applied in most buying and selling operations by the yellow entity's management."
The good news for Villarreal CF is that they can still add a considerable amount to their income. If Atlético de Madrid manages to qualify for the Champions League final, the yellow club will receive an additional two million euros. Should the Madrid team win the top European competition, Villarreal would earn three million more, totaling an extra five million.
