The lack of controls on social media has led to several Valencian politicians, such as the mayor of Benidorm and the mayor of Castellón de la Plana, reporting the creation of fake profiles to deceive citizens.

Identity theft on digital platforms has become a common practice, also affecting public figures. Recently, three Valencian political personalities have publicly denounced the existence of fake accounts attempting to impersonate them.
One of those affected was the mayor of Benidorm, who warned this Monday on Instagram about a fake profile on Facebook that replicated his name with a slight variation. The councilor expressed his pride in his real surname, emphasizing the difference from the fake name.

"Proud to be Pérez Pérez, but Pérezez no…"

The president of the Provincial Council of Castellón also warned over the weekend of a similar attempt. A profile with a variation of her name was sending private messages with the intention of deceiving. The provincial corporation issued a press release to denounce the situation, and the politician reminded people of her official profiles to avoid confusion.
Finally, the mayor of Castellón de la Plana has reported that she was impersonated on Facebook by a profile that contacted third parties to deceive them. The local leader regrets that this practice is becoming increasingly frequent, taking advantage of the image of public figures, and has urged citizens to report any suspicious profiles, especially to protect older people, who are more vulnerable to these frauds.
