Polop Castle, a historic enclave in Marina Baixa, has been rehabilitated and musealized thanks to a 900,000 euro investment from the Alicante Provincial Council, restoring its cultural and tourist value.
The Alicante Provincial Council has completed the rehabilitation and musealization works of Polop Castle, a significant project that has allowed the recovery and enhancement of one of the most representative enclaves in the town. This site stands out for its historical significance as well as its cultural, tourist, and landscape relevance.
The inauguration of the project, which involved a provincial investment of 900,000 euros and was carried out in various phases, took place yesterday afternoon. The event was attended by the president of the institution, as well as the municipal mayor and the regional minister of Industry, Tourism, Innovation, and Commerce.

"Polop Castle is part of the landscape, life, memory, and identity of this town; it is a mandatory stop for all those who visit the Marina Baixa region and, by extension, the province of Alicante. Of immense patrimonial value, it also constitutes a relevant tourist attraction, and that is why we care for it, respect it, and preserve it."
The intervention by the Alicante Provincial Council was carried out through the Architecture and Infrastructure Areas, respecting authenticity and ensuring the historical interpretation of its values. Among the works undertaken in the different phases are the consolidation and recovery of the tower, the cemetery area, and the walls, as well as archaeological excavations that have revealed how this space was organized.

"Enhancing one of the most relevant castles in Marina Baixa, such as Polop, allows more people to visit it, thus contributing to the development of our municipality and its economy."
Dating back to the Almohad era (12th-13th centuries), Polop de la Marina Castle was incorporated into the Crown of Aragon by the Treaty of Almizra in 1244, a historical milestone that would mark the town's future. During the 19th century, it was transformed into a cemetery, known as Cementeri Vell, and became the inspiration for the writing Huerto de Cruces included in the last book by a distinguished Alicante writer, Años y leguas (1928). Precisely, one of the replanted cypresses in the gardens of the Provincial Palace comes from this site as a tribute to the writer.

"Polop Castle is once again part of the life of the municipality, a space recovered for its residents and also for all visitors, a place to walk, to meet, and to enjoy the wonderful natural environment that surrounds it."
