The public corporation RTVE has initiated the machinery for Benidorm Fest 2027 with the official publication of its rules. This edition, the sixth of the festival, begins marked by the major unknown regarding Spain's potential return to Eurovision in 2027, following its absence in 2026.
The competition's rules include a crucial clarification for participants: if RTVE decides to return to Eurovision, the winner of Benidorm Fest will automatically be Spain's representative in the European contest. This measure allows the festival to maintain its role as a Eurovision pre-selection, while also protecting itself against the possibility that Spain may not participate in the international event.
This strategy by RTVE aims to give Benidorm Fest its own identity, beyond its connection with Eurovision. The corporation argues that the format should establish itself as a prominent platform for Spanish music, regardless of the European context. The festival has become a cultural and television phenomenon, attracting both established and emerging artists.
In parallel, RTVE continues to work on improving the format and its international projection. Recent developments include agreements with platforms such as Spotify and Univisión, offering additional professional opportunities to participants. The connection with Eurovision remains one of its main attractions, but Benidorm Fest seeks its own relevance.
The lack of a firm decision on Eurovision creates uncertainty among aspirants, as participation in Benidorm Fest does not guarantee the opportunity to compete on the European stage. However, RTVE maintains that the festival will proceed, and the main question now is whether its winner will receive the added prize of representing Spain at Eurovision or if the competition will continue its path independently.
