The Marina Alta experienced a new heat record this Thursday, as Pego registered 36.9 degrees, the highest temperature recorded so far this year. This figure comes just days after unusual temperatures for the season were reached on May 26th, with 36.7 degrees in the same locality.
The northern inland areas of the region were the most affected by the heat, with maximum temperatures exceeding 35 degrees in L’Atzúvia and 34 in El Ràfol. The proximity of Safor, which was on yellow alert for heat, also contributed to the suffocating atmosphere.
In addition to the high daytime temperatures, many towns in the Marina Alta experienced tropical nights, with minimums exceeding 21 degrees in locations such as Teulada, Benissa, Dénia, and Xàbia, and surpassing twenty degrees in others like Calp, La Xara, Pego, Verger, Benitatxell, and Pedreguer, according to data from Avamet and MeteoXàbia.
The westerly wind, known as Poniente, exacerbated the feeling of heat in a large part of the region. Wind gusts exceeded 81 km/h in Alt de la Granadella in Xàbia, and over 70 km/h in parts of the coast of Xàbia and Calp.
However, this prolonged heat episode appears to be coming to an end. Starting Friday, a sharp change in weather is expected, with a drop in maximum temperatures of up to 8 degrees. Furthermore, Aemet forecasts possible rainfall throughout the day.
The forecast indicates a return to calmer conditions over the weekend, although maximum temperatures will remain moderate.
