A photographer's skill has captured in Dénia an image that, without historical comparison, presents admirable visual similarities to the emblematic World War II photograph, 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima'. Both scenes, separated by 81 years, showcase the collective effort involved in raising a flag.
The local snapshot, by Tino Calvo, was taken on Thursday morning in Dénia. Workers from the company Pavasal manually raised the pole with the blue flag that the El Raset beach has once again earned this year. This gesture occurred during the presentation of the new beach cleaning service, which will cover the city's coastline for the next ten years. The event, while ceremonial, served to recognize the work of the 23 operators who will ensure the cleanliness of the sandy areas throughout the summer, often under extreme temperatures.
The historical image, titled 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima', was captured on February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal during World War II. It shows six men raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. This Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph is considered one of the most important and reproduced images in war history. Three of the men in the photo died in combat, while the survivors became celebrities. Later investigations identified one of the men as Harold Schultz, not Bradley as initially believed. The image inspired the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.
