Valencian companies Júpiter Saturnal Energía, S.L. and Espiral Energy, S.L. have withdrawn their applications to the Generalitat Valenciana for the construction of two hybrid photovoltaic plants in the municipality of Xàbia. The decision follows a series of contrary environmental and urban planning reports that have made the project unviable.
The Territorial Service of Industry, Energy, and Mines has proceeded with the definitive archiving of the files, ending a process that aimed to implement a large-scale energy storage system near the road connecting Xàbia with Gata de Gorgos.
The main reason that led the companies to request the archiving of the files, named “PSFH Javea I” and “PSFH Javea II”, has been the technical and legal incompatibility with the Plan de Ordenación de los Recursos Naturales (PORN) of the Montgó Natural Park. The urban planning certificate from the Xàbia City Council already warned of this incompatibility.
Furthermore, an Environmental Impact Determination Report had already identified significant adverse effects. Finally, the Directorate General of Natural and Animal Environment issued unfavorable reports, confirming the total incompatibility of the solar parks with the PORN and pointing out serious landscape, territorial, and environmental impacts. Faced with this scenario, the companies opted for withdrawal to recover the economic guarantees deposited.
The aborted project was designed for a plot of 75,337 square meters of non-developable land in the Els Falandrons area. The initial plan envisioned the solar module surface area occupying 22,064 square meters, with production buildings limited to 150 square meters.
Each plant was to have an installed capacity of 7.15 MW and an energy storage capacity of 6,000 kWh using LFP batteries. The system was calculated to supply energy for two hours daily and had an estimated lifespan of twelve years. For the evacuation of electricity, a 3,200-meter underground line was planned to avoid visual impact and risks to avifauna.
