The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA) has warned about a wave of thefts in irrigation wells, causing severe damage to agricultural operations in Ribera Alta and l'Horta Sud.
These criminal acts cause significant damage to irrigation infrastructures, often preventing the normal development of agricultural activity. Thieves steal high-value materials in the illegal market, such as copper, batteries, electrical wiring, water extraction pumps, and electronic equipment.
Furthermore, the theft of fuel stored in these facilities is also common, further exacerbating the economic impact of these crimes. The problem is not limited solely to the costs derived from replacing stolen materials or repairing damaged infrastructures.
“
"These are criminal groups that come with machinery and are prepared, with angle grinders and tools to commit the crime; this is not a matter of getting in and out in two minutes."
The paralysis of irrigation systems can lead to very significant crop losses, especially during critical periods of crop development, if repairs are not carried out quickly enough. A farmer from Montroi suffered the theft of his irrigation well, where the transformer and all the wiring were stolen, with losses amounting to approximately 15,000 euros.
Given this situation, AVA-ASAJA recommends that farmers install security devices as a preventive measure. These systems are effective in increasing the difficulty and risk of committing thefts, acting as a deterrent. Additionally, they allow for real-time alerts of intrusions and the collection of evidence.
The entity has demanded effective law enforcement in rural areas, following the entry into force of the modification of the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Law to toughen penalties for thefts on agricultural and livestock farms. According to AVA-ASAJA estimates, thefts in the agricultural sector of the Valencian Community cause annual losses close to 30 million euros.
“
"Farmers cannot continue to be defenseless victims of this scourge. Each theft not only represents economic harm but also a moral blow to those who work daily in the fields."
