The Plenary Hall of the Valencia Provincial Council served as the venue for a significant gathering on the occasion of Roma People's Day. This initiative brought together representatives from various Romani associations across the province, with the primary goal of giving visibility to the rich Romani culture, advocating for equal rights, and emphasizing the urgent need to implement truly effective integration policies.
“"Much is said about six million Jews, and that is true, but also about the Roma, and this must be known so that it does not happen again."
During the reception, Francisco Santiago, head of the Federation of Romani Associations of the Valencian Community (FAGA), recalled the tragic persecution of 1945, when over 500,000 Roma were victims of barbarity during the Holocaust. This historical memory was highlighted to ensure that such atrocities are not repeated.
For his part, Jesús Ramírez, vice-president of the Valencian Council of the Roma People and president of FAGA Valencia, called for the adoption of active and positive policies, including affirmative action measures. The objective is to combat persistent inequalities affecting the Romani community in fundamental areas such as housing, education, and employment. He stressed the importance of institutions like the Provincial Council being close to the most disadvantaged groups.
The president of the Provincial Council, Vicent Mompó, emphasized the importance of working with mutual respect to build a better future. He highlighted the reduction of school dropout rates, the improvement of labor integration, and the guarantee of a dignified life for all citizens, considering these essential pillars for a more inclusive province.
The event saw broad representation, with the presence of over twenty Romani associations, including Adonay, Mestipen, Confianza, Shiriab, Romi de Valencia, Vida Nueva Entre Culturas, and the Fundación Secretariado Gitano. Federations such as Maranatha and the Autonomous Federation of Romani Associations also attended, along with authorities like the second vice-president of the Provincial Council, Reme Mazzolari; the autonomous secretary for Equality and Diversity, Asunción Quinzá; and the director general of Diversity, Stephane Soriano.
