The Conselleria de Sanitat and the Consorci Hospital General Universitari de València will compensate the family of a 69-year-old woman with 225,000 euros. She died from acute pancreatitis after remaining 36 hours without attention in the Emergency Room of the hospital.
The agreement, resulting from an administrative procedure and a patrimonial claim, has been announced by the Defensor del Paciente association. The entity's lawyers secured the compensation for the medical negligence suffered by the patient, who remained in an observation box from the early morning of her admission day until her death the following day.
“
"The patient suffered the inaction and passivity of the medical-sanitary staff, thus being deprived of the possibility of medical treatment that would remedy and end the acute pancreatitis that caused her premature death."
During the 36 hours the woman spent in the Emergency Room box, no vital signs, analytics, or additional examinations were recorded beyond the initial one upon admission. The events date back to May 7, 2025, when the patient went to the hospital with abdominal pain and vomiting. After an initial examination and tests such as an ultrasound, she was diagnosed with acute biliary pancreatitis and admitted.
However, the lack of available beds in hospitalization or treatment rooms forced the patient to remain in the Emergency Room box. According to the association, she was
36 hours waiting for someone to attend to her
, until
she finally passed away alone waiting in the Emergency Room box, without any doctor, faculty, nurse, or sanitary worker of any kind noticing
. When the death was detected, it was too late for any resuscitation attempts.
The association emphasizes that severe acute pancreatitis requires intensive monitoring and treatment, as its rapid progression can be fatal. They highlight the importance of continuous monitoring to detect signs of severity in time. The entity concludes that the medical actions would have been
easily avoidable, as it is about providing a minimum of attention to the condition of patients who are within the hospital facilities
. They consider it unacceptable that the patient remained for a day and a half without any attention from the healthcare staff.
