Alicante's Vía Parque experienced substantial traffic congestion due to a failure in the TRAM's traffic light priority system. The incident occurred near the North Zone, by the Virgen del Carmen neighborhood, affecting exits towards San Juan Beach and causing significant delays just before 8:00 PM.
Unlike other occasions, the cause of this gridlock was not an accident or excessive vehicle volume, but a technical issue. The malfunction was located in the tram's sensing and communication mechanism with the traffic light network, which failed to operate correctly.
The system is designed to detect approaching TRAM convoys and adjust traffic lights to grant them priority, while always respecting minimum times for pedestrians and other vehicles. However, on this occasion, the signal indicating that the tram had already crossed became blocked, maintaining inappropriate traffic light phases and hindering the flow of road traffic.
This dysfunction created a ripple effect, with particularly intense congestion on one of the city's main ring roads during rush hour. The situation surprised residents, as such severe traffic jams are not common in this area.
In response to the incident, both the Local Police and technical maintenance teams were alerted and intervened to restore normal circulation. Municipal sources confirmed that the problem had been resolved and traffic in the area was returning to normal.
