The Government Board of Elche has ratified the award of the Santa María Square renovation for 2.9 million euros, a project that will be executed in phases to be compatible with the upcoming Festes d'Elx and the Misteri d'Elx.

The Government Board of the Elche City Council has confirmed the award of the renovation works for Santa María Square to the UTE Acsa y Bertolín. The contract, valued at 2.9 million euros, has been formalized with the expectation of starting work in approximately one and a half months, as reported by the board's spokesperson, Inma Mora.
This project, considered emblematic for the municipal bipartisan government, faces the challenge of the approaching Festes d'Elx. With a ten-month execution period, the works will be carried out in phases to avoid interference with the festive program, including the Serenata and the procession of the Misteri d'Elx from the Casa de la Festa. This strategy will allow the coexistence of the works with the cultural agenda and the reorganization of the hospitality terraces in the area.
Regarding local businesses, an initial meeting has already been held between Mayor Pablo Ruz, Commerce Councilor Caridad Martínez, and representatives of the hospitality sector. The intention to install terraces in adjacent areas of the square has been communicated, with a possible location near the mutual insurance company, although details will be finalized in the definitive work plan.
In parallel, the Government Board has also addressed other issues. The contract for the renovation of the planters in Nieves Berenguer Garden, on Obispo Barrachina street, has been terminated, with a bond of 7,055 euros seized from the company Cauce Infraestructuras due to delays and deficiencies. Additionally, the reurbanization of 2,700 meters in Carrer Major del Plà has been approved, with a budget of 190,000 euros, to be carried out by Involucra.
Among future actions, the initiation of the tender process for the adaptation of several civic-sociocultural centers in districts such as Llano de San José, Alzabares, La Palmera (Algoda), Asprillas, Torrellano Bajo, Perleta, and Santa Ana has been approved, with a budget of 126,000 euros. The tender for the installation of tensioned sails in nine public schools in Elche has also begun, with an investment of 240,000 euros, to protect students from the sun and heat.
Finally, the payment of outstanding certifications for works, services, and supplies from previous fiscal years, totaling 795,000 euros, has been approved, utilizing the surplus obtained from the settlement of the 2025 fiscal year.
