The General Directorate of Energy and Mines of the Generalitat has granted a 30-year extension for the continuation of extractive activity at the Fontcalent quarry in Alicante.

The administrative resolution allows the multinational responsible for the facility to maintain operations until the year 2053. This decision concludes a long processing period that began a decade ago and has received various favorable reports from the regional administrations responsible for environmental and quality matters.
The approved project defines an exploitation perimeter of more than 65 hectares. In addition to the continuity of extraction, the agreement validates a comprehensive restoration plan that the company must execute once the concession period ends. This environmental action has an estimated budget of over 5.6 million euros.
During the public consultation phase, various conservationist groups and neighborhood associations submitted observations regarding the project. However, the General Directorate has validated the proposal after the company introduced the required modifications to the restoration plan to ensure compliance with the environmental impact statement issued in July 2023.
The resolution notes that this extension does not exempt the company from complying with other necessary sectoral authorizations. Specifically, it must adhere to technical indications regarding mobility and road intersections in the Fontcalent area, according to reports from the General Directorate of Public Works.
