On the occasion of the National Organ and Tissue Donor Day, the hospital center expressed its deep gratitude to the donors and their families. This year's campaign, themed “Give a LIKE to LIFE. Donate organs, give futures,” promoted by the Union of Solid Organ Transplant Recipients and the National Transplant Organization, highlights that behind every transplant lies a generous decision offering a second chance.
The event, held at Doctor Balmis, included participation from associations such as the Alicante Association for the Fight Against Kidney Diseases and the Association of Patients and Liver Transplant Recipients of the Valencian Community. The Deputy Nursing Director of Quality, Teaching, Research, and Information Systems, Inés González, conveyed the hospital management's appreciation.
As part of the commemoration, a participatory mural with the message “Thank you, donors” was installed in the main lobby. This space allows patients, families, staff, and visitors to express their gratitude. The Head of the Transplant Coordination Service, Miguel Perdiguero, thanked the associations for creating this meeting point, which gives a voice to those who have received a new opportunity.
The mural will soon be moved to the area in front of the Transplant Coordination office to encourage broader participation. The day also featured a floral offering at the monument dedicated to donors and a musical performance by doctor and pianist Francisco Cholbi, accompanied by María José Yáñez Navarro and Ignacio Hernández Gosálvez.
Transplant Coordinator Nurse Marian Miralles emphasized the festive nature of the event, calling it “a celebration of life thanks to organ donation.” In 2025, Doctor Balmis registered 31 donors (27 deceased and 4 living).
Both Dr. Perdiguero and Marian Miralles stressed the importance of discussing organ donation within families. “Talking about donation at home saves lives,” stated Dr. Perdiguero, highlighting the Spanish model as an international benchmark and the significance of nurturing a culture of solidarity through educational projects in schools.
The national campaign underscores the pillars of the Spanish model: sustained leadership, the public, universal, and equitable nature of the system, coordination, commitment to quality, and the high specialization of healthcare professionals. At Doctor Balmis, this reality is embodied by over 1,140 donors, each representing a life story that has enabled others to continue living or significantly improve their quality of life.
