Pediatricians in Alicante stress that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot replace the essential human medical assessment for diagnosing children.

The Pediatrics department at Vithas Medimar Hospital in Alicante has warned that, despite technological advancements, children's health requires a face-to-face, specialized medical evaluation, factors that algorithms cannot replicate.
Dr. Carolina Sanz, the area's medical coordinator, explains that there are several scientific and clinical reasons why AI can never replace a doctor. These include the reliance on a detailed physical examination for pediatric diagnosis, such as assessing muscle tone or skin hydration, which AI cannot perform.
Furthermore, the doctor points out the lack of context in data analysis by algorithms, as pediatricians consider the family environment, the child's history, and subtle changes in behavior. She also warns of the risk of biases and erroneous data from the internet, which could endanger the child's health.
Another key point is the "lack of empathy and emotional support." A pediatric consultation offers reassurance to parents and knows how to calm a child during a test, something an app cannot do. Finally, the doctor mentions the danger of self-medication, as automated diagnoses can lead to the purchase of unnecessary drugs, delaying proper treatment.
Vithas Medimar Hospital reminds that digital tools should support professionals, not serve as health guides for parents. Direct clinical experience is essential for medical decisions in child health.
