The Popular Party of Alcoy has called for the immediate resignation of Mayor Toni Francés, after he failed to pass a vote of confidence linked to the municipal budgets in today's plenary session.

The PP's demand comes after the vote of confidence, debated in an extraordinary plenary session, did not succeed, with votes against from PP, Vox, and Guanyar Alcoi. This situation now opens a one-month period for the presentation of a motion of no confidence or, failing that, the direct approval of the budgets.

"From the Popular Party, we consider the mayor's current situation unsustainable, and it has reached a breaking point. Toni Francés has presented budgets that have not obtained the necessary support from the plenary, demonstrating that he has lost the confidence of the municipal corporation. In any democratic system, losing a vote of confidence implies assuming political responsibilities."

The Alcoy government is in a minority with 12 councilors (nine from the PSOE and three from Compromís), against the 13 from the opposition (eight from the PP, three from Vox, and two from Guanyar Alcoi). The motion of no confidence does not seem to have an easy path, as Guanyar Alcoi would not foreseeably join, unless the protocol to study the viability of the Alcoi Sud Business Park is broken, an issue that the PP demanded clarification on to negotiate the accounts.
Carlos Pastor, municipal spokesperson for the PP in Alcoy and provincial deputy, stressed that the non-approval of the budgets is not a minor event. He added that the mayor intends to remain in office despite having lost the confidence of the plenary, an attitude that, according to him, degrades institutions and disrespects citizens.

"We demand that Toni Francés set an example for society, assume his responsibility, and present his resignation, placing his position at the disposal of the municipal plenary. It is time for all political groups, both those who have supported the vote of confidence and those who have not, to clearly position themselves and say whether or not they want this government to continue with Toni Francés at the helm."
