The proposal was chosen from among 104 designs submitted, and its authors, architects Javier and Carlos Rodríguez Alcoba, will now undertake the drafting of the execution project and the construction management.
The awards ceremony was held at the Provincial Palace, with the participation of the president of the Alicante Provincial Council, Toni Pérez, and the mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, along with other institutional representatives and jury members.
“"Today we are awarding a project that is the basis of a very important facility that will serve to enhance all the municipalities of the province and, in particular, to further magnify the city of Elche."
The winning project has received a prize of 108,900 euros and the commission for the drafting of the execution project and construction management, valued at 5.3 million euros. According to the jury, 'Trencadís' stands out for its elevated position, which offers wide views of the Palmeral and fosters a more open urban relationship.
The designers emphasized that the Palmeral of Elche is the main protagonist of the intervention, seeking to ensure the proposal integrated and dialogued perfectly with the site.
The competition also recognized with second and third prizes the projects 'Porxà', by Pablo Sequero Barrero, and 'Julio', by Sastrevielba SLP, awarded 72,600 and 48,400 euros, respectively. Additionally, honorable mentions were given to 'Daraxa' and 'Bustan Al’Nakhil', and two special mentions to 'Ferriol' and 'Mirador del Palmeral'.
The sketches of the awarded projects will be exhibited in the coming weeks in a new exhibition in Elche, after having been displayed in the gardens of the Provincial Council. This exhibition will allow citizens to learn about the recognized proposals in one of the most prominent architectural competitions promoted in the province.
The future Elche Congress Palace will be located on a plot next to the Bus Station and opposite the Miguel Hernández University, with an estimated cost of 50 million euros. The venue will have a capacity for over 3,000 people and an area of 13,000 square meters.
The complex will combine congress events with musical uses, including a main hall of 2,000 square meters and 1,200 seats, plus five auxiliary rooms. The project also includes offices, a cafeteria, a press room, storage areas, and a large exhibition space or foyer of 2,000 square meters. The intervention will be completed with the urbanization of the surroundings and a three-story car park for 420 spaces, reinforcing the building's role as a driver of congress, cultural, and economic activity for Elche and the province.
