The Elche City Council has decided to postpone the removal and dismantling of the Nuevos Riegos El Progreso facade until after the Elche Festivities, to avoid traffic disruptions during these important dates.

The municipal corporation already has the execution project, designed by the awarded company Studiomas Concept. The Governing Board will approve the tender for the works this Thursday, but the start of the work will be delayed to avoid interfering with the celebration of the patron saint festivities.
The dismantling of the century-old industrial facade, which was the former water sales room, is estimated to take three months. This intervention will not be simple, as the facade has become accustomed to the metal supports that prop it up, requiring meticulous work. Once completed, the new municipal office building can be erected, with the facade aligned with the rest of the street. During the removal, it will be necessary to cut off traffic, although the duration has not been specified.

"We are all going to gain a building integrating heritage and a street with a double lane."

The total cost of dismantling and recovering the facade, included in the protection catalog, exceeds 210,000 euros. Once the facade and its most valuable parts are removed, the double lane leading to Almórida street can be reopened to traffic. The facade will be stored until it is integrated into the new building. The construction of the new building will be tendered towards the end of the year or early 2027.
To unblock the situation, the City Council had to purchase the building from the property, which demanded lost profits. Finally, 920,000 euros were paid for the building rights. This amount includes a purchase of 777,146.7 euros and compensation of 141,668 euros as a transactional agreement of responsibility, as the property had sued the consistory.
To the 210,000 euros for dismantling, the estimated cost of constructing the new building, calculated at approximately 1.9 million euros, must be added. This brings the total cost to about 3 million euros to resolve a situation that has lasted almost a decade since the facade was shored up urgently. The new municipal building will have a basement, ground floor, and four stories, with a total of 900 square meters built, intended for municipal offices to reduce rental costs.
