The Orihuela City Council has opened the application period for one of the 28 plots available in the fourth call for Municipal Ecological Urban Gardens, aiming to promote sustainable agriculture and self-consumption.

The Department of Environment has launched this new edition following the publication of the rules in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante (BOP). This call arises to fill vacancies created by the expiration of previous authorizations, ensuring the continuity of a project initiated in 2021 that seeks to promote ecological agriculture among citizens.
The municipal gardens, located on Camino de Enmedio, in the Soto del río I6 area, cover a total area of 3,000 square meters. They are divided into 32 plots, of which 28 are offered in this call for personal use.
The deadline for submitting applications will be ten calendar days from the day following publication in the BOP. Interested individuals must register their application at the General Registry of the City Council or through any of the systems provided in Law 39/2015. The official form is found in Annex II of the rules.
Eligible applicants must be of legal age, registered in Orihuela for at least one year, prove to be up to date with their tax obligations to the City Council, not own rustic properties in the municipality (except for situations outlined in the rules), and have the physical capacity to perform agricultural tasks.
Once the deadline has passed, the City Council will publish the provisional list of admitted and excluded persons, opening a period for appeals. The allocation will be made according to established scoring criteria, which prioritize unemployed individuals without benefits with family responsibilities, unemployed with benefits, those over 65 years old, pensioners, and, after them, the rest of the applicants in order of registration. If the number of applications exceeds the available plots, a public draw will be held. Additionally, a list of substitutes will be prepared to cover possible vacancies during the usage period.
The permit will have an initial duration of one year, renewable for another year. The use of the plots will begin in September, coinciding with planting calendars. Current users must cease using the plots on the start date established for the new assignees, unless they are re-assigned.
Users must exclusively dedicate production to family self-consumption, employ ecological agriculture methods, maintain the plot in good condition, and comply with all usage rules, including subscribing to civil liability and damage insurance. The rules of the call can be consulted in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante and on the electronic headquarters of the Orihuela City Council.
