The Generalitat expects the expansion works at Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela to conclude by the end of this year, aiming for all new planned services to be operational.

The total investment for this project exceeds 82 million euros and is part of the Generalitat's strategy for the legislature, defined as that of new hospitals in the Valencian Community. Works worth 8.5 million euros have already been executed, including the new main lobby, the Emergency platform, the helipad, and the waste building, among other already operational improvements.
The expansion will increase the hospital's surface area by 40%, from 36,300 square meters to over 50,000. The project includes the construction of two new buildings annexed to the current center and connected to it.
The North building will house outpatient consultations, the day hospital, and the mental health area. With this improvement, the hospital will increase from 30 to 98 medical consultations and from 10 to 23 nursing consultations. Endoscopy rooms will also be expanded, growing from two to five.
The new Day Hospital will feature an oncohematological area with 16 stations and a multipurpose area with another 16, increasing total capacity from 20 to 32 beds. Additionally, a specific mental health day hospital for adults and children with capacity for 15 patients will be added, along with 12 new procedure rooms.
The South building will be dedicated to outpatient surgery. It will house a major ambulatory surgery unit, a post-anesthesia recovery area, a minor surgery unit, a new sterilization center, and a new hemodialysis unit. The project also includes a larger parking area, new outdoor spaces, and accessibility improvements to the facility. Furthermore, 52 additional hospitalization beds and safety measures against climatic risks will be incorporated.
Once this expansion is completed, the Generalitat plans a second phase of transformation for the hospital center, which will include a new delivery room, the expansion of Emergency, Radiology, and ICU, as well as a future Short-Stay Unit and a pre-admission unit to streamline hospital admissions. It has also been announced that an agreement will soon be signed to initiate procedures for the future health center in Orihuela Costa, one of the main healthcare demands of the Orihuela coast.
