The city of Gandia is hosting the sixth edition of the Book Square, an event aimed at promoting Valencian literature and critical thinking. The event, which will take place from May 14 to 17 in Plaça Rei Jaume I, offers a diverse program under the theme “Reading for Recovery”.
“"The sixth edition of Gandia's Book Square represents a celebration of the city's sustained commitment to promoting Valencian literature and defending its own language."
The event's presentation took place at the Central Library of Gandia, where the strong commitment of the Gandia City Council to this cultural initiative was highlighted. It was emphasized that over 30% of municipal library loans correspond to Valencian literature, demonstrating interest in reading in the native language.
This edition will feature over 2,500 titles in Valencian and the involvement of bookstores and cultural entities. The program includes activities for all audiences, from meetings with writers to poetry, illustration, and educational proposals, turning the square into a grand celebration of letters.
“"It is fundamental to champion a literature that is perfectly comparable to any international literature."
The organization has highlighted Gandia's historical link with Valencian literature, consolidating the city as a cultural cornerstone. The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has also joined the project, considering Valencian literature a transversal axis for society as a whole. This year, the CEIC Alfons el Vell has organized activities focused on historical memory, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Civil War.
The program includes round tables, exhibitions, dramatized readings, and conversations with authors. Furthermore, the commitment to promoting reading among children and young people is maintained with school activities and storytelling. There will also be debate spaces on the role of culture and libraries in contemporary society, as well as activities related to poetry, music, and gastronomy.
