In a context of international tension over the control of energy resources, such as the recent war in Iran, the program presented by Jose Sáez focuses on energy dependence and alternatives to reduce it. The global situation, with events like the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, has demonstrated the volatility of crude oil prices and the need to seek solutions.
The search for oil in Spain has a long history, and the Valencian Community has not been an exception. The first well was drilled in Rojales in 1950, and operations later moved to Xeraco. In total, 58 attempts to find oil have been made in the Valencian territory.
The most recent attempt occurred two decades ago in the Gulf of Valencia, where a company intended to carry out explorations with the possibility of finding up to 70 million barrels of crude oil. However, this initiative faced strong opposition. 'Zoom' analyzes the consequences that the continuation of these explorations would have had and how it would have affected the Valencian coast.
The benefits of having our own energy resources are great, but so are the risks. Castor is an example of the price that can be paid when seeking energy self-sufficiency.
The program also recalls the case of the Castor project, which caused more than 500 earthquakes in 2013 in Castelló and Tarragona, with tremors reaching magnitudes of up to 4.2 on the Richter scale. This episode forced the closure of the platform and generated an economic cost that, according to environmental sources, could exceed 4 billion euros, borne by the citizens.
