This milestone occurred during the traditional 'Baixà' of the Virgin, the act that officially kicks off the celebrations and which annually gathers a large crowd. The female presence in the representation of 'les quatre parts del món', one of the most emblematic and deeply rooted figures of the processional ceremony, represents a significant change in Cullera's festive history.
“"Our festivities have grown over time, opening up to all citizens and consolidating themselves as a participatory and vibrant space. With this new step, Cullera reaffirms its commitment to modern, egalitarian festivities faithful to its cultural heritage."
The Major Festivities of Cullera, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), are celebrated until April 19 and, according to Mayor Jordi Mayor, represent a unique combination of history, tradition, and evolution. This advancement adds to the appointment of the first 'macera' in 2022, another event that marked a milestone in local festive history.
'Les quatre parts del món' are traditional figures that accompany the Mare de Déu del Castell in the solemn processions of the 'Baixà', the 'Pujà', and that of Sant Vicent. Their function is ceremonial and to escort the considered "queen of the Heavens". This element is fundamental in the collective imagination of Cullera, closely linked to popular devotion and the festive identity of the municipality.
The attire of these figures, of great symbolic value, is a prominent part of local iconography: a wide blouse and blue tights, short breeches with lace, a ribbed collar, cuffs, and a characteristic hat adorned with pearls and flowers. A bunch of colored silk ribbons completes the ensemble, adding splendor and solemnity to the retinue.
