The third edition of the Fira de la Tomaca in Rafelguaraf concluded with the celebration of its most anticipated contests. The inaugural Friday served to announce the winners of the traditional tapas contest, prepared by local restaurateurs, and the prestigious horticultural contest dedicated to the native product.
Local gastronomy once again stood out for its innovation using the Valencian tomato. Bar John Lennon secured first prize in the tapas contest, revalidating last year's victory. Second prize went to Bar La Piscina, and third to Bar el Hostal. Additionally, Bar La Piscina also received the innovation award for its original proposal.
The horticultural contest, named 'Memorial Gonzalo Peiró', featured the cultivation of the Valencian tomato as its highlight. A panel of experts, including journalist Miguel Ángel Font, farmer Toni Ríos, UPV Biology and Genetics professor Salvador Soler, Councilor for Agriculture Miguel Ángel Pons, Pepe Briz, and gastronomic critic Vicent Gil, presided over by Julio Quilis (president of the Valencian Tomato Producers Association), evaluated the fruits' organoleptic quality, pulp, and firmness.
Following a rigorous deliberation, Rafael Galbis was crowned with the highest recognition for excellent cultivation. Second prize was awarded to Paco Peiró, and third prize to Vicent Roig.
With the presentation of these awards, Rafelguaraf kicked off a weekend dedicated to its star zero-kilometer product, reaffirming the commitment of the Producers Association and the City Council to preserve traditional seeds and ensure a dignified market outlet for farmers.
