The Socialist Municipal Group in the Castelló City Council has publicly denounced the local government's intention, led by the Popular Party and Vox, to privatize the Castelló City Museum (MUCC), a decision that, according to the socialists, turns culture into a business.

The deputy spokesperson for the PSPV, José Luis López, directly questioned the government team about the MUCC's management plans during an informative commission. The response confirmed their fears: the municipal government of the right and far-right intends to divest itself of one of Castelló's cultural benchmarks.

"Begoña Carrasco has decided to cross a red line by attempting to commercialize a cultural space that belongs to all citizens."

José Luis López · Deputy Spokesperson for PSPV
López warned that culture cannot be subject to economic profitability criteria or depend on private interests. He recalled that the Castelló City Museum was created in 2018 by the progressive government that emerged from the Pacte del Grau, comprising PSPV, Compromís, and Castelló en Moviment, with the aim of structuring, protecting, and disseminating the city's historical and cultural heritage from a public, accessible, and quality perspective.
Since its inception, the MUCC has consolidated itself as an innovative, non-centralized model that integrates different heritage spaces distributed throughout the municipal area. These emblematic enclaves include the Castell Vell, the Ermita de la Magdalena, the Fadrí, the Anti-aircraft Shelter, and the Roman villa of Vinamargo, forming a museum network that allows understanding Castelló's historical evolution.
Furthermore, in 2019, the MUCC became part of the Generalitat Valenciana's museum network, which represented institutional recognition of the project's quality and facilitated its projection, as well as access to resources and collaborations in the cultural field. Since its creation, the MUCC has developed intense cultural, educational, and outreach activities, including exhibitions, guided tours, and pedagogical programs.

"The MUCC has not only protected our heritage but has also democratized it, making it accessible to all citizens. Privatizing its management endangers this successful model and opens the door to cuts and loss of public control."

José Luis López · Deputy Spokesperson for PSPV
For all these reasons, the Socialist Municipal Group demands that Begoña Carrasco's government immediately rectify its decision and guarantee the public management of the Castelló City Museum. López concluded that they will not allow one of the greatest cultural achievements of recent years in their city to be dismantled.
