The new migrant regularization law requires a «vulnerability report» to legally reside in Spain. The difficulty in obtaining it has led many people to sleep on the street, awaiting the office's opening on Monday morning in Castelló.
These individuals, involved in the regularization process, are queuing to increase their chances of being attended at the Ronda Mijares office, on the first day that resources are centralized at this location. Migrant collectives denounce the slowness of the municipal department responsible for issuing these reports.
“"Some people who tried to anticipate the arrival of the law have been waiting for the report for four months and have not yet received it."
The Castelló City Council has decided to centralize migrant services at Ronda Mijares, 14, starting this Monday, to prevent service collapse. According to the Social Coexistence and Interculturality Department, people needing regularization will be attended in an orderly manner. A municipal spokesperson last week attributed the queues to the central government, arguing that municipalities were given little time to organize and that there was no foresight or planning.
The operating hours for the Office for Migrant Services this Monday will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Although the city council states that no prior appointment is necessary, anxiety over potential overcrowding has led some to sleep there to ensure they are attended.
