The town of Utiel is immersed in a year of commemorations to remember Enrique Rambal García, its most illustrious son and theatrical pioneer, seventy years after his death in a traffic accident in Valencia on May 10, 1956.

This 2026, Utiel pays tribute to Enrique Rambal García, known as the «Magician of the Stage», a visionary who revolutionized theater and carried the name of his homeland across stages worldwide. The commemoration, marking seven decades since his passing, seeks to rescue from oblivion the figure of this artist, often confused with his son, the actor Enrique Rambal Sagi-Vela.
Born in Utiel in September 1889, Rambal was an innovator who, by the age of 17, was already a leading actor in Valencia. His vision led him to create immersive spectacles, using up to 47 backdrops and pioneering special effects, such as integrating cinematic footage into his plays. This engineering capability in service of emotion made his productions «Rambalesque».
The commemorative program, a collaboration between the Utiel City Council, the Universitat de València, l'ETNO, the Filmoteca Valenciana, and Caixa Popular, kicked off on March 27, International Theater Day. Among the activities already held, the Teatro Rambal hosted the exhibition «Magician of the Stage», organized by the Agrupación Escènica Enrique Rambal, and the Cultural Center La Nau of the UV presented the adaptation of Mozart and Salieri.

"He overthrew the tyranny of text to prioritize image."

Francisca Ferrer · Biographer of Enrique Rambal
Currently, the Casa de Cultura de Utiel hosts the exhibition «Enrique Rambal. A Forgotten Genius» until May 5, which is part of the Seasonal University coordinated by UVSocietat. This exhibition, with the participation of experts such as biographer Francisca Ferrer and specialist Jesús Peris, explores Rambal's trajectory from his beginnings to his international influence.
On May 7, the Palmireno Room of the Faculty of Geography and History of the UV in Valencia will host an academic seminar with figures such as Rodolf Sirera and Ramón X. Roselló. Finally, on May 10, an intimate tribute will be held at the municipal cemetery of Utiel, coinciding with the anniversary of his death. Rambal's legacy will extend until 2026, with l'ETNO incorporating original costumes into its permanent exhibition and the Filmoteca Valenciana programming a film series in June, including the screening of El desaparecido (1935), starring Rambal himself.
