Villarreal CF lost 2-0 to Rayo Vallecano at Vallecas, postponing the fight for third place in LaLiga to the final matchday against Atlético de Madrid.

Villarreal CF was overcome by Rayo Vallecano (2-0) in a match with little intensity at Vallecas, leaving the decision for third place in LaLiga to the final matchday. The Yellow Submarine will face Atlético de Madrid next Sunday at the Estadio de la Cerámica, level on points with the Mattress Makers.
The encounter, described as a 'gentleman's match' given both teams' objectives were already met (Champions League for Villarreal and permanence for Rayo), generated more interest in the handshake between coaches Marcelino and Iñigo Pérez, the latter's future replacement. Villarreal fielded a similar lineup to previous matches, with Willy Kambwala starting in defense, despite his evident lack of match fitness.
The first 20 minutes showed a dominant Villarreal, with chances including a shot from Oluwaseyi and a strike against the crossbar by Sergi Cardona. However, Rayo took the lead in the 28th minute thanks to an individual play by Camello, who beat Kambwala and scored past Arnau Tenas. The first half ended with this scoreline.
The second half began with an early goal for Rayo. In the 47th minute, a loss of possession by Moleiro led to Alemao finding himself alone against Tenas and scoring to make it 2-0. The match was later paused for an emotional tribute to Trejo, who is leaving the Madrid club, with the participation of the entire Rayo squad and Villarreal.
The only positive news for Villarreal was the return to the pitch of Logan Costa. With this defeat, the Submarine will have to seek victory at home against Atlético de Madrid to secure third place, a feat that would mark the second time in their history they have qualified for the Champions League consecutively.
