Villarreal CF has achieved a milestone in national football by establishing itself in privileged positions, with its constant presence in European competitions. This trajectory has been the result of institutional management and sporting successes, which have allowed the Vila-real club to maintain a significant projection both in Spain and in Europe.
The club, which debuted under its current name in 1954, is today considered the most important football-wise in the Valencian Community. Its stadium has a federative license since 1923, and its first official match was on September 12, 1954, with a two-all draw against Acero in the Port de Sagunt.
The city of Vila-real was already looking towards Europe long before football put it on the map. Historically, oranges were a fundamental foreign exchange capital for Spain, with a Customs office at the station to certify wagons destined for the French border. The great exporters of that era have been replaced by the figure of the ceramic entrepreneur, who now drives the club.
The future of the club, known as “groguet”, is promising. This word, along with “granota” and “taronja” in basketball, has been incorporated into the common language of national media as Valencianisms. Meanwhile, the club's morale remains strong, unlike other entities facing moments of greater sporting uncertainty.
