This plan, formalized with the awarding of the new service contract last April, will allow interventions in nearly 40 public spaces and 14 play areas located in educational centers. The deputy mayor and councilor for Public Services, Maria Fajardo, has highlighted that the objective is “to progressively restore these spaces to optimal condition, guaranteeing the safety, functionality, and quality of the areas intended for children's play and citizens' physical activity”.
The contract includes preventive and corrective actions in parks and gardens distributed across different neighborhoods, including emblematic spaces such as the parks of Pilar, Jaume I, Josep Calduch, Melilla, Glorieta 20 de Febrer, Mayorazga, Botànic Calduch, Sant Pasqual, Llibertat, Pinella, Sant Ferran, Serra d’Irta, plaza de Aliaga, Panderola, or l’Alguer.
The first interventions will focus on the children's and biosaludable area of plaza de Sant Ferran, as well as the leisure space between Italia and Bélgica avenues, the park of Mayorazga, and the Glorieta del 20 de Febrer. The awarded company has already received notification of various incidents detected recently to prioritize the most urgent actions.
From the Public Services department, it has been noted that, thanks to this award, an audit of the condition of the playgrounds has also been carried out to design a future comprehensive improvement plan. Furthermore, the possibility of launching a citizen consultation to understand user needs and plan future investments is being considered.
Among the planned improvements are the repair and replacement of deteriorated elements such as swing seats, springs, caps, handles, wooden panels, stairs, slides, metal fencing, or signage. New children's games and play structures will also be incorporated, such as seesaws, two-seater swings, high-density slides, multi-play structures, playhouses, or pyramid-type structures, with the aim of modernizing and expanding the recreational offer.
The councilor recalled that, while the awarding process was underway, the City Council had already carried out emergency actions in some areas with greater deterioration, as was the case in l’Alguer park. According to Fajardo, the action seeks “to unblock a necessary improvement in spaces heavily used by families and move towards more dignified, safe playgrounds adapted to the needs of the youngest”.
