The new service contract, formalized this April, includes preventive and corrective actions in nearly 40 spaces located in parks and gardens, as well as in 14 play areas in educational centers. The scope of work covers numerous emblematic parks in the city, such as the gardens of El Pilar, Jaume I, Josep Calduch, Melilla, de les Maestras, Glorieta 20 de Febrer, Mayorazga, Botànic Calduch, Sant Pasqual, la Llibertat, Pinella, Sant Ferran, la Serra d’Irta, Plaça d’Aliaga, la Panderola, Pont de la Gallega, Pou d’Amorós, and l’Alguer.
The deputy mayor and councilor for Public Services, Maria Fajardo, emphasized that the main objective is to “progressively restore these spaces to optimal condition, ensuring the safety, functionality, and quality of the areas intended for children's play and citizens' physical activity.” Thanks to the contract, a comprehensive audit has been conducted to outline a global improvement plan. Fajardo also announced the council's intention to launch a citizen consultation to gather user needs and plan future investments.
The initial interventions will focus on the children's area and biosaludable equipment in Plaça de Sant Ferran, the leisure space between Avenues Italia and Bèlgica, Mayorazga Park, and the Glorieta del 20 de Febrer. The contract has already enabled the transfer of recently detected issues to the awarded company to prioritize the most urgent actions.
Maintenance tasks include the repair and replacement of deteriorated elements, such as swing seats, caps, handles, phenolic wood panels, ladders, and slides. The installation of informational signs and the replacement of the metal perimeter fencing are also planned, thereby enhancing safety and accessibility.
The project also includes the renovation and replacement of children's play equipment with new elements such as spring riders, seesaws, swings, slides, towers, multi-play structures, and playhouses. The department had already carried out emergency actions in areas with significant deterioration, such as l’Alguer Park, due to the duration of the awarding process.
