The Alicante team arrived in Vila-real hoping to keep their promotion play-off chances alive, following a convincing home victory. However, an eight-point gap to the top spots with only twelve points left to play made the task challenging. The coach repeated the starting eleven, with the only exception of a defensive change.
Despite a confident start, errors in ball distribution and a lack of attacking cohesion doomed Hércules. Villarreal B, sitting fourth and under pressure from their pursuing rivals, offered no easy chances. The hosts' high press led to the first goal, scored by Hugo López in the 26th minute, after a mistake in a pass from Nacho Monsalve.
“"The reaction to the goal from Hércules was a failed project. The ball definitively became the local team's, and the blue-and-white players were late to challenges, trying to cut off David Albelda's team's ball distribution."
Before halftime, a controversial play marked the match. Unai Ropero received a pass in the box, and the local goalkeeper, Rubén Gómez, collided with him without touching the ball. The referee initially awarded a penalty, but after reviewing the FVS, he overturned the decision for offside, a call that generated controversy.
In the second half, Hércules tried to react, seeking more possession and depth. A shot from Retu from the edge of the box almost equalized the score, but Rubén Gómez made a great save. Villarreal B also had their chance with a shot hitting the post from Carlos Maciá, and sought a more direct game with the introduction of Etienne Eto’o.
The final twenty-five minutes were uneventful for Hércules, who, despite having possession, failed to create dangerous opportunities. The lack of ideas in the opponent's half allowed Villarreal B to maintain their lead without major difficulties. Now, Hércules faces the last nine points with a dangerous five-point gap above the relegation zone, with crucial matches against Ibiza, Nàstic, and Algeciras.
