The Burriana City Council has presented the new municipal canine DNA census registry today, a measure intended to guarantee pet protection and promote citizen responsibility.

The initiative, part of the municipal ordinance on the protection, ownership, and sale of animals, primarily aims to safeguard pets against loss or theft, while also implementing awareness and sanctioning measures for individuals who disrespect the urban environment or fail to collect their dogs' excrement.
The registration campaign will officially begin on June 15 and run until September 30, 2026. During this period, saliva extraction and genetic registration will be free of charge. After this date, the cost for owners who have not regularized their pets' status will be 37.85 euros.
The procedure requires owners to book an appointment at the town's collaborating veterinary centers. Following a painless saliva swab, an identification tag with a QR code will be provided to help locate the animal if it gets lost.
The City Council reminds citizens that DNA identification is mandatory. Once the deadline passes, the Burriana Local Police may request the relevant documentation, with fines ranging from 500 to 3,000 euros for infractions such as failure to register, abandoning excrement, or allowing animals to roam untied in public spaces.

"The genetic footprint is the best protection we can offer our pets, as it allows for 100% unalterable identification in cases of loss, theft, or mistreatment. We encourage all residents to take advantage of the free period starting this June 15 to actively collaborate in responsible pet ownership in Burriana."

Isabel Monfort · Councilor of Health

"With the implementation of canine DNA, we are moving towards a cleaner, more civic, and respectful Burriana. Today we begin the path of a measure that ensures we can all enjoy public spaces in perfect condition and free of excrement, because this tool will allow us to eradicate the uncivil behavior of a few to achieve the image of Burriana that we all desire."

Jorge Monferrer · Mayor of Burriana
