The Compromís per Castelló coalition has announced its intention to reintroduce a tourist tax proposal to the municipal plenary, which could generate approximately 4 million euros annually for the city with a 2-euro per night contribution from visitors.

The political group argues that the current tourism management model places the burden of tourism-related service costs on the residents of Castelló de la Plana, without direct contributions from visitors. Therefore, it plans an institutional declaration to gather support and urge the Generalitat Valenciana to establish a regulatory framework for implementing this tax.
According to data from the Castelló Tourism Strategic Plan 2025 and municipal figures, the city receives over 500,000 visitors annually with an average stay of 3.9 nights. A symbolic tax of 2 euros per night could generate approximately 4 million euros annually. These funds would be allocated to reinforce urban cleaning, security, the conservation of the coastline and heritage, and to promote tourism deseasonalization policies.
The coalition has emphasized that tourist activity places considerable pressure on public services, such as urban space maintenance and security, and has pointed out the lack of a mechanism for tourists to contribute to their funding. In this regard, it has highlighted that numerous European and Spanish territories have already implemented similar measures to move towards a fairer and more sustainable tourism model.

"Castelló residents pay a tourist tax when they travel abroad while bearing the costs of services when they receive visitors. The municipal government's refusal is an ideological stance, and implementing the tax would alleviate the tax burden on citizens."

Ignasi Garcia · Spokesperson for Compromís
The spokesperson for Compromís, Ignasi Garcia, has criticized the Popular Party's stance, considering the municipal government's refusal to implement the tax as purely ideological. Garcia has argued that this measure would not only make tourism more sustainable but also reduce the tax pressure on the citizens of Castelló.
