A socialist councilor has described the state of the venue, which should be the "flagship" of local sports, as "shameful." Among the detailed damages, which affect the daily lives of users and sports clubs, are broken toilets, unused solar panels, rusted elements due to lack of treatment, broken gutters, and unrepaired cracks in ceilings and windows.
“"It is inadmissible that a city that prides itself on being a tourist reference maintains its sports infrastructures in this state. Even the security camera system does not work."
Given this situation, the socialist ranks have proposed concrete measures to curb the degradation of the Palau. Firstly, the design of a comprehensive maintenance plan and, additionally, allocating municipal staff to carry out necessary daily repairs at the venue.
“"There is no point in buying new equipment or announcing millionaire repairs if there is no one to take care of the facilities day by day. The local government's lack of foresight is very costly for all Benidorm residents."
Secondly, it has been demanded that the City Council intensify surveillance of the facilities when holding all kinds of events, so that any damage caused is repaired by the promoters and the council does not have to bear the cost, "as has recently happened with the basketball hoops".
Special mention has been made of the situation of the swimming pool, where the dehumidifier has been broken for more than a year. Although the government team assures that they plan to replace it, the reality is that users suffer the consequences daily.
“"Forcing windows to be opened continuously for ventilation is not a solution; it is a patch that directly affects thermal comfort and environmental quality of the venue. It is another example of the patch-up policy: waiting for things to completely break down before acting, instead of maintaining what we have."
Finally, the councilor has linked this abandonment to the mayor's agenda, stating that he is "more concerned with his parties and his social media photo sessions than with the real problems of his city." He has demanded that he "stop looking the other way and get to work so that Benidorm's athletes have the facilities they deserve."
