Júcar reservoirs improve, but Marina Baixa remains on drought alert

Despite general improvement in the Júcar and Turia basins, the Marina Baixa region maintains its alert status due to water scarcity.

The Júcar basin reservoirs show a favorable situation, reaching 69% of their capacity, one of the best records in recent decades in the Valencian Community.

The Júcar Hydrographic Confederation has reported that the stored volume reaches 1,943 cubic hectometers, representing the second-best figure in the last 35 years and guaranteeing supply for users in the demarcation.
This good state of the reservoirs is explained by abundant rainfall recorded since the beginning of the hydrological year, with 351 millimeters accumulated, well above the historical average of 246.9 mm. This behavior has allowed for increased reservoir reserves, improved river contributions, and aquifer recharge, in addition to reducing irrigation needs in crops due to higher soil moisture.

"This is a wetter-than-normal year, which is favoring the positive evolution of water resources."

Manuel Torán · Technical Director of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation
Despite the generally favorable situation, not all systems are in the same state. The Serpis and Marina Baixa areas continue in alert and pre-alert scenarios, respectively. In the case of Marina Baixa, reserves have improved compared to the previous year, although they remain at reduced levels, partly compensated by the use of groundwater and the Mutxamel desalination plant.
Conversely, the rest of the systems show optimal levels, with reservoirs such as Ulldecona, Regajo, and Arquillo de San Blas standing out, practically at 100% of their seasonal capacity. The Turia and Júcar systems record their best figures in recent years, exceeding 60% and approaching 75% capacity, respectively, which allows facing the irrigation campaign with guarantees in much of the Valencian territory.

"Saving must be our hallmark, as a dry year could again create difficulties in some systems."

Manuel Torán · Technical Director of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation
Despite the positive data, the Confederation insists on the need for responsible water use, as the situation continues to depend on future climate conditions. Efficient and prudent management of resources will be key to ensuring the sustainability of the water system in the medium and long term.
