The School of the Sea (Esmar) project, based in Altea la Vella, originated from the idea of transforming creativity and collaboration into an effective tool for change. Initially, a group of individuals felt the urge to generate a positive impact through art as a vehicle for environmental causes. Since then, the initiative has grown, attracting over forty children, adults, and a group of artists who provide financial support for this endeavor.
Founded by two Germans and a Belgian who chose to live in Spain decades ago, Esmar began as an initiative to raise funds through art exhibitions and local collaborations, aiming to protect the sea and the natural environment. Over time, the need arose to go further, creating its own structure with a clear educational purpose.
Thus, the Circle of Artists, promoted by Berty Overhues, gained a new dimension from the Melitón restaurant estate in Altea la Vella, focusing on environmental education for the youngest. Its philosophy is summarized by the idea of “sowing education to harvest responsibility,” with the goal of forming a generation that understands the importance of protecting the sea and feels an active part of that responsibility.
The project began its educational activities with a solidarity action where children participated in workshops on marine pollution. This experience combined theoretical learning with practical actions, such as beach clean-ups and awareness activities in public spaces. Creativity is also fundamental, with artistic activities where children create objects and messages to express their vision for marine protection.
“"When people come together, great things can be achieved."
Collaboration is another key pillar, with the support of a committed team and the participation of an artistic collective that contributes to solidarity exhibitions and educational workshops. Currently, Esmar is developing an annual program with creative workshops, interactive dynamics, and collaborations with educational centers, seeking to expand its reach and consolidate itself as a benchmark in environmental education in the region.
On April 18th and 19th, the Melitón estate will host an art exhibition where 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the association, thus funding the creation and development of new educational activities.
