The Marina Baixa region is closer to having a new public transport service project. The Directorate General of Transport and Logistics has given initial approval to the document that will replace the current emergency contract. The Generalitat Valenciana estimates that the service will be valued at 129,475,531.10 euros over ten years, of which the regional administration will contribute 52,187,466.60 euros to balance operations during this period.
This Monday marked the opening of the public information period for submitting allegations, which will remain open for the next 30 working days. Once this period concludes and if there are no setbacks, it will be definitively approved for implementation. Sources from the Conselleria report that the new project follows the lines of what was already announced with the emergency contract in February 2026.
The public road transport service project, updated in March 2026, connects the municipalities of l'Alfàs del Pi, Altea, Beniardà, Benifato, Benimantell, Bolulla, Callosa d'en Sarrià, Confrides, Finestrat, El Castell de Guadalest, La Nucia, Orxeta, Polop, Relleu, Sella, Tàrbena, and La Vila Joiosa with Benidorm. The main objective is to achieve greater efficiency and sustainability of the system in the medium to long term, as well as to promote the use of public transport over private vehicles.
“"The greater efficiency and sustainability of the system in the medium-long term and the promotion of the use of public transport (in this case the bus) over private vehicles."
20 lines have been designed, eight of which are main lines, including direct connections to the Hospital de la Marina Baixa and the central hubs of Benidorm. Among the novelties, a flexible offer for high tourist demand in summer is included, along with complementarity with the Tram service, and the implementation of Transport on Demand (TAD) services in the Guadalest Valley and mountain areas to combat depopulation.
The new design ensures that all municipalities have direct or transfer connections to the regional hospital, located in La Vila Joiosa. Improvements also include night service for tourist areas during peak seasons and payment modernization, transitioning from analog cash payments to card and mobile payments. The fare system applies a single zone for the entire region, with a single ticket costing 2 euros and discounts for those over 65 and large families.
