The Mare de Déu de Loreto Festival Commission and the Xàbia City Council present the 28th edition of the ‘Living Chess’ event, scheduled for Saturday, July 25th, on Lepanto Avenue in Duanes, inspired by Jules Verne's work.

The spectacle, declared a National Tourist Interest Festival since 2002, adapts Verne's novel into a chess game, promoting cultural diversity and local identity with references to the municipality's history and figures. The performance will begin at the Club de la Barraca, replacing the whist game with a tute match, and will feature historical Xàbia personalities such as Juan Bautista Soler Blasco and Ramona Fernández de Palencia.
The base game will be the renowned «Kasparov's Immortal». The event's poster, an artisanal illustration by María Gilabert García, captures the adventurous spirit. The complexity of the adaptation has involved significant artistic effort in costumes, set design, and live music by the Orquestra Simfònica de Xàbia.
A new feature this year is the preceding cultural week, which includes a screening of the film Around the World in 80 Days (2004) on Tuesday, July 21st, a conference on Ruy López de Segura on Friday, July 24th, a chess initiation workshop on Saturday, July 25th, and simultaneous games with Grandmaster Renier Castellanos Rodríguez and Woman International Master Silvia-Raluca Sgîrcea on Sunday, July 26th.
The guest of honor will be the writer Blue Jeans (Francisco de Paula Fernández), known for trilogies such as Canciones para Paula and El Club de los Incomprendidos. The cultural week also includes a living chess performance by a delegation from Zafra.
